Acrylics

Acrylics are relatively new the the art world but have been used to create art that is sure to be with us for many years to come.

My Experience and Opinion on Acrylic Paints

I have often been asked by people just beginning to paint, what is the best brand of acrylic to use? That's very difficult to answer. I feel that choosing the right paint only comes from experience. As a beginner and an art student, I chose to use the least expensive paint that I could find. The inexpensive paint allowed me to experiment and refine my technique, permitting mistake after mistake without costing a fortune.

After years of experimenting, I have come to like several brands. Liquitex, Golden, Daler Rowney, and Winsor Newton. Normally all brands come in two grades, student and professional. They also often come in tubes, jars, and bottles. I prefer the professional grade, heavy body paints that come in the jars. Their heavy body makes them much thicker and they seem to carry a bit more pigment. This allows me to thin them out with different mediums while keeping a relatively intense color.
